What to do
The Ribordone Valley is one of the wildest and untouched valleys in Piedmont. Its nature has
remained uncontaminated since many people left the area after WWI and thanks to the Gran
Paradiso National Park Authority's protection. In fact, in recent years, little to no human activity did
not alter its landscape.
Walks in the valley - Several paths reach alp pastures, where the margari (Piedmontese word for
shepherds) live. From June to September, they drive herds of cattle, sheep, and goats from Ciantel
del re (Cianti du Roi) to Oregge (Ureggi), from Pian Crest to Reiss.
There are paths for all levels of experience: paved trails with a few-hundred-meters altitude
difference (e.g., the old road leading pilgrims to the Prascondù shrine) and more challenging
excursions for expert and well-equipped travelers, such as the ascent to mount Colombo. With an
altitude difference of 1,400 meters, it is the highest mountain in the valley (2878m). From its top, it
is possible to enjoy the breathtaking view of the alpine landscape. The excursions to the Lago Gelato
and lake Lazin are also worth mentioning.
Since nature here is untouched, please come equipped with clothing accordingly to the season:
trekking boots, trekking poles, and warm jackets might be necessary. On this page, you will find
information on each path. Printed maps will be available on site.
Prascondù shrine - At the bottom of the valley, a shrine was built to honor the Madonna di Prascondù. You can reach the shrine by car through the carriage road or on foot through the old, paved way that was in use until the 50s (30-minute walk).
This 1620 church houses a wooden statue of the Madonna di Loreto in whose honor the church was
built. The church was erected following a miraculous event: the apparition of the Madonna to the
young shepherd boy Giovannino Bernardi in 1619. On the 27 th of August, the faithful celebrate the
recurrence of this event in the Festa del Santuario. On this occasion, the participants donate items
that are then sold at an auction during the ceremony.
Here, the Gran Paradiso National Park authority has inaugurated the Ecomuseo della Religiosità
Popolare (for information and for excursion planning, please visit the Park's website www.pngp.it)
Fishing in the creek - The Ribordone Sportfishing Association (Associazione Pesca Sportiva Ribordonese) allows everyone to experience trout fishing in the Rio Bordone creek. Fishing permits can be purchased at:
